Share your building type, postcode and approximate number of fire doors so we can confirm the inspection requirements and provide a quote.

Why fire doors matter

Fire doors protect escape routes and limit the spread of fire

Fire doors help restrict the spread of fire and smoke and protect escape routes. Their effectiveness depends on the condition of the complete door assembly and its ability to close correctly when required.

Gaps, damaged seals, missing parts, wedged-open doors and poor repairs can all reduce how well a fire door performs, often without anyone noticing.

What an inspection may look at

What a fire door inspection looks at

The inspection reviews the visible condition and operation of each door, where it can be seen and reached. The items checked depend on the door and the building.

Door leaf and frame

The condition of the door leaf and frame, including visible damage, alterations, repairs and apparent suitability for the location.

Gaps around the door

Clearances around the door leaf, considered against the door’s requirements and relevant guidance where this information is available.

Seals

The presence and condition of intumescent and smoke seals, where fitted and visible.

Hinges and ironmongery

Whether hinges, latches and other fittings are present, secure and appear appropriate.

Door closer and operation

Whether self-closing doors close fully and reliably, and whether obstructions or unapproved devices prevent them from closing.

Glazing and signage

The condition of any glazing and beading, and whether signage is present and appropriate.

Apex provides inspection and advice. It does not install, repair or replace doors.

Limits

The scope of a visual inspection

Findings relate to the accessible condition and operation of the doors at the time of the visit. A visual inspection cannot confirm concealed construction or establish fire resistance through testing.

Things to know

  • Findings are based on what can be seen and reached at the time of the inspection
  • Hidden details, such as the inside of a door leaf or the fixing of a frame, may not be visible
  • Apex does not certify doors or guarantee their fire performance
  • Where something needs further investigation, repair or replacement, Apex will say so and explain why

Questions

Fire door inspection questions

Short answers to common questions. If yours is not here, call or email Apex.

Is a fire door inspection the same as a fire risk assessment?

No. A fire risk assessment looks at fire safety across the whole building. A fire door inspection looks specifically at the condition and operation of fire doors. Many buildings benefit from both.

Does Apex repair or replace defective fire doors?

No. Apex provides inspection and independent advice only. That keeps the advice impartial: you can choose who carries out any work.

What do you need to give a quote?

The type of building, its postcode, how many fire doors it has (an estimate is fine) and whether access to all of them is straightforward.

Do you inspect fire doors outside the Midlands?

Apex works across the Midlands and can consider work further afield depending on the scope and travel involved.
